Kanpur, Aug 25 (INB) IIT Kanpur alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional Rs 300 crore towards the development of the institute’s Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, taking his total contribution to the school to Rs 400 crore, the institute said. Gangwal had contributed Rs 100 crore in 2022 to support IIT Kanpur’s plans to establish a medical school on its campus, according to the institute’s Information and Media Outreach Cell said on Monday. Under the latest commitment, Gangwal will provide matching grants of up to Rs 300 crore against contributions from other supporters towards the development of the school. The initiative is aimed at encouraging alumni, philanthropists and other well-wishers to support IIT Kanpur’s medical education, research and MedTech ambitions. The development plan includes a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus and a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre, the institute said. The planned facilities are intended to support medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery while bringing doctors, researchers, engineers and technology experts together to develop solutions to emerging healthcare challenges. IIT Kanpur Director Prof Manindra Agrawal expressed gratitude to Gangwal, saying the additional contribution would help the institute realise its vision of integrating engineering, technology and medicine to transform healthcare delivery, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. Prof Anil K Lalwani, Dean of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, said the contribution could help catalyse a broader transformation by bringing medicine, technology and innovation together for societal benefit. Gangwal, a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Kanpur, said it was an honour and privilege to be part of the medical institution. The Gangwal School aims to combine IIT Kanpur’s expertise in engineering, science and technology with medical sciences, with a focus on advanced academic programmes, interdisciplinary research, futuristic medicine and medical technology innovation, the institute said.
