US suspends proposed tariff on China till Nov 10, base tariff of 10 pc to continue

Washington, Aug 11 (INB) The United States has for the second time suspended a proposed tariff on imports from China till November 10 while it will continue to impose a base tariff of 10 per cent, an executive order from White House said on Monday evening.
The US has proposed a 100 per cent tariff on semiconductors, sector specific duty ranging from 7.5 to 100 per cent besides 10 per cent reciprocal tariff.
“I have just signed an Executive Order that will extend the Tariff Suspension on China for another 90 days. All other elements of the Agreement will remain the same. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” US President Donald J Trump said in a social media post.
The executive order said that the action is necessary to facilitate ongoing and productive discussion with China about remedying trade imbalances, unfair trade practices, expanding market access for American exports, and aligning with the United States on national security and economic matters.
“The United States and China have engaged in multiple rounds of productive negotiations to address trade reciprocity and national security concerns. The United States will therefore maintain the suspension of heightened tariffs on Chinese imports, as outlined in Executive Order 14298, until November 10, 2025,” the order said.
US tariffs on Chinese imports were scaled up to 245 per cent but scaled back during a 90 day truce period.
The US goods trade deficit with China was USD 295.4 billion in 2024—the largest with any trading partner and the deficit is already decreasing substantially on an annual basis, the order said.
The order follows a meeting of US and China government officials in Stockholm on August 12 as per central European time zone.
“The United States will continue to modify the application of the additional ad valorem rate of duty on articles of China (including articles of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Macau Special Administrative Region) set forth in Executive Order 14257 of April 2, 2025, by suspending 24 percentage points of that rate for an additional period of 90 days, starting on August 12, 2025, while retaining the remaining ad valorem rate of 10 percent on those articles pursuant to the terms of said Order,” a US-China joint statement said.
China will also follow a similar level of taxes on US goods.
“We’re getting along with China very well,” Trump said.
