New delhi, Jul 24 (INB) The Delhi University has advised students and faculty to stay away from ongoing protests at Jantar Mantar and warned of consequences, with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday hitting back at the varsity and accusing it of threatening students for exercising their democratic rights. There is a massive ongoing protest at the Jantar Mantar in the national capital led by an online movement under the name of Cockroach Janata Party and headlined by innovator-activist Sonam Wangchuk over alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive government exams such as NEET. The demonstrations have drawn in large numbers youth including many believed to be from various colleges of the DU. On Thursday night, DU posted an advisory on X, asking students and faculty to avoid unlawful assemblies or demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, stating that such gatherings are regulated under Supreme Court directives and may invite legal action. The university said participation in unlawful demonstrations could pose risks to students’ personal safety and adversely affect their academic progress and professional opportunities. It urged students to prioritise their safety, comply with the law and stay away from Jantar Mantar. The advisory also cautioned against fake and misleading content circulating on social media that could aggravate the situation. The university’s advisory came amid calls for protests in the national capital, triggering sharp political criticism from the Congress leader. On Friday, Congress MP and former party president Rahul Gandhi responded to the X post of DU and wrote: “How dare you threaten students for exercising their democratic rights? Please note, you are the ones that will be held accountable when the time comes.”
